The victory was United's first in the league since the end of August and ended a 9 game wait for victory.
Lucas Mann had two early sighters for United as he found space behind the centre backs, but on both occasions the ball just ran away from him as he attempted to round the 'keeper.
Wade Eason, Aaron Capon and Mann all saw efforts saved by EP 'keeper James Broadbent, while at the other end, Russ Tanner made a superb double save firstly to deny a swerving effort from Karley Akehurst and the follow up effort from Oli Lockyer.
With just over 30 minutes played, Michael Death found himself through on goal, but Mike Gardner made up ground on the striker to make a last ditch tackle to deny the frontman.
Two minutes later, the home side took the lead as Luke Martin fired under Tanner following a long ball forward.
Half time brought a change of formation and personnel as James Messenger came on for his United debut in the place of Eason.
The change paid dividends as United had a concerted spell of possesion in the EP half and resulted in United's equaliser.
A weak backpass was pounced upon by Mann, who took the ball round Broadbent and confidently slotted the ball home from a narrow angle for his fifth league goal of the season.
The impressive Capon forced Broadbent into a smart low save with twenty minutes remaining, but two minutes later Broadbent was beaten for a second time.
Capon headed the ball over the EP defence to find Mann, who rifled an unstoppable left footed drive in at Broadbent's near post.
Capon was again involved in United's third goal as he squared for Jason Taylor who hit a first time effort from 20 yards that curled away from the despairing dive of Broadbent.
Mann was denied his hat-trick by a full length diving save, but a fourth goal came in time added on as Mann flicked on a goal kick from Tanner as Taylor ran through to slot home and round off a fantastic afternoon for United
