Eastbourne United AFC finished their season on a high with a hard fought victory over Hailsham Town at The Oval to complete the league double over their local rivals.
United went into the match on the back of a disappointing 3-2 defeat at Midhurst & Easebourne on Saturday and looked to claim the local bragging rights from their already promoted opponents.
The match was not the greatest of spectacles for either set fans, with a strong wind and rain putting pay to any flowing football being played.
Hailsham came closest to taking the lead early on in the match as Steve Stracey was in the right place at the right time to clear off of the United goaline.
United had their first real chance of the half on 34 minutes as Simon Catt tested Tanner in the Hailsham goal from distance, but the ‘keeper held on despite the slippery conditions.
The breakthrough for the home side did come just before half-time however, as marauding full back Gianluca Del-Gaudio found space on the left 20 yards out from goal and placed home a delightful right foot finish across Tanner’s goal to send United into the break one goal to the good.
The second half was very much the same as the first, with very little action for either goalkeeper. Arguably United’s best chance of the whole match fell to Pete Cooper with just over an hour played, but the top scorer fired wide when under pressure from the Hailsham defence.
Cooper was again involved a minute later as his good work and cross from the left wing found Simon Catt who was unable to test Tanner.
Despite the introduction of former United striker Shane Saunders, United held firm and battled right up to the final whistle to secure a second 1-0 victory in a row over Hailsham and in doing so, inflicted only the fourth league defeat of the season to the visitors.
