Paul Daubeney made four changes from the side that emphatically despatched Broadbridge Heath 6-1 on Saturday, with Shaun Lee, Mark Goodwin, Simon Catt and Jack Divall returning to the starting line-up in the place of Grant Harrison, Jamie Bunn, Pete Cooper and Nick Barden who all took their place on the bench.
United were looking to claim a second Ryman League scalp of the season after defeating Lewes in the previous round and started magnificently when Goodwin crossed for Liam Baitup to head home past former Eastbourne Borough ‘keeper Nick Jordan with just two minutes played.
Baitup, playing as a lone striker, then rattled Jordan’s crossbar minutes later as United started the match at a lightning pace before Jordan Clarke had the first clear chance as he shot wide for the visitors.
Bognor pulled level on the half-hour when Ashley-Paul Robinson struck home past Adam Sargent from just outside the area.
Shaun Lee came close to restoring United’s lead but his 30 yard effort whistled past the post but it was Baitup who got his second of the evening when he slid home after 35 minutes.
Bognor, who are currently fifth in the Ryman Premier League pulled level again just two minutes later when Portsmouth loanee Dan Thompson fired home from the edge of the United area.
Bognor took the lead for the first time in the contest on 41 minutes when Robinson got his second of the night from the penalty spot, lashing home past Sargent.
Danny Simmonds came closest to equalising for United at the start of the second half but couldn’t direct his shot past Jordan.
Bognor stretched their lead ten minutes into the second half as Robinson crossed from the byline to set up Jordan Clarke.
United belied the 63 place gap in the non-league pyramid and refused to lie down with Simon Catt unfortunate to trip before having the opportunity to shoot after good work to beat two Bognor defenders.
United’s never say die attitude paid off on 70 minutes when Steve Stracey played in Liam Baitup for the striker to complete his fourth hat-trick of the season from ten yards out.
Baitup might have equalised soon after following a slip in the Bognor defence, but his effort went wide.
United pushed hard in the last twenty minutes, doing everything they could to force an equaliser with Jamie Bunn having United’s final chance of the match, but he was unable to produce a finish as it proved to be the visitors night as they progressed to the last eight of the Sussex Senior Cup.
Despite the result, United can be proud of their efforts in this season’s competition after defeating one higher level opposition and pushing a second until the very final whistle.
